Here are some of our suggestions for doing so:

1. Nursing

Breastfeeding baby is not only a healthy way to engage in feeding time, but it’s one of the most beneficial bonding experiences between mother and child. This activity allows you to get an up close look at your child’s facial expressions and body language as well. Even if you’re unable to nurse, or you’re a dad, bottle feeding with a bunch of talking and interaction is just as good!

2. Sleep Nearby

If you still can’t get enough bonding in during the day, sleep near your child at night. This is also a great way to be ready to take care of any issues that arise in the middle of the night for a newborn. You can rest assured that your baby will be safe and comforted.

Interpret the Cry

While it may be tough to examine while you’re trying to ease your child, interpreting their cry is another great bonding technique. As your baby develops, you’ll learn to figure out the reason behind their crying a lot easier. This will help a lot in terms of fixing any issues that arise.

3. Baby Massage

Giving your little one a gentle massage is a great bonding activity for you two. On top of the bonding, this will also help to relax their muscles, increase circulation, and reduce stress in the process!

4. Playtime

Giving your new baby constant stimulation and play opportunities is not only beneficial to their development and growth, but for your development from parent to child as well. 5 Tips to Help Baby’s Constipation

Help Baby’s ConstipationWhen you have a little infant in the house, there are a hundred things to worry about. You’ll find yourself very concerned about your little one’s bowel movements. If your child becomes constipated, you’ll be particularly worried because of how uncomfortable they’ll seem. Here’s how you can help.

Belly Massage

Massaging your baby’s belly could end up being a very simple remedy for constipation. Measure three fingers-widths below their navel on the lower left side and begin to massage with gentle pressure. A couple minutes of this may be able to get their body running smoothly again.

Glycerin Suppository

If your child is still constipated after changing up their diet, you can try using a glycerin suppository to stimulate a bowel movement. A glycerin suppository is a hyperosmotic laxative that works by irritating the lining of the intestine and increasing the amount of fluid in your child. This makes stools easier to pass and can work well on occasion to cure the constipation. The only concern is to not rely on this method too often, as your child may begin relying on them to have a bowel movement.

Diet Change

Changing up a baby’s diet is an easy way you can try breaking up the constipation in a child. If they haven’t started solid foods yet, try switching to a different brand or type of formula for them. Also, if they’re breastfeeding, a change in Mom’s diet could actually make the difference as well. If they’re ready for solids, try feeding your baby certain fruits and vegetables that will get their digestive system back on track.

Exercise

Getting your child moving is another possible cure for constipation. Whether it’s crawling around chasing their toys, rolling around with their favorite blanket or stuffed animal, or getting their legs churning with the help of mom, any movement to get their digestive system more active should help.

Contact a Physician

If all else fails, contacting your child’s doctor is your best bet to get additional advice. In addition to any treatment options that they may offer, you should ask them about any over-the-counter stool softeners or products that are safe enough for a baby to take. If you’re thinking about a laxative, you should always consult with a doctor before trying this with a small child or infant.

11 Baby Sleep Tips

baby sleep tipsIn the womb, your baby woke and slept on his own schedule, depending on his body’s needs. In the world, however, babies need to be taught how to sleep. In fact, there’s an entire industry of consultants that is devoted to teaching little ones how to get the rest they need. By the time your child is four or five months old, he should be sleeping for 4-5 hours at a time. Use these tips to help him sleep.

1. Dim the lights. Our bodies use light to establish a circadian rhythm. Use bright lighting when you are active during the day and dim lights when it’s time to wind down for bed to put your baby in a sleepy mood.

2. Make some noise. In the womb, there are LOTS of sounds all day and night long. Your baby is more comfortable with a bit of white noise in the background.

3. Keep the room cool. Infants sleep best when the room is between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If you can’t adjust the thermostat by room, leave a fan running on low.

4. Give a massage. Babies like massages for the same reason you and I do. Use gentle strokes and slight pressure for a few minutes before putting your baby down to sleep.

5. Teach self-soothing. Your baby needs to learn to fall asleep with your presence. Put your baby into the crib when he’s drowsy but before he falls asleep. You want him to become accustomed to falling asleep on his own. If he cries out, soothe him but do not pick him up. This will help him learn how to fall back asleep when he wakes up at night.

6. Swaddle! The swaddle is arguably one of the most effective sleep aides for babies. It makes them feel secure and prevents the start reflex.

7. Remove caffeine from your diet. If you are breastfeeding, any caffeine you drink will make its way into your baby’s system, keeping them awake.

8. Avoid eye contact. When your baby meets your gaze, he focuses his attention, and his blood pressure and heart rate rise. Look away when he’s falling asleep so he won’t focus.

9. Feed in the evenings. Full stomachs make everyone sleepy.

10. Create a bedtime routine. Perform the same activities every night before bed. It could include a bedtime story, a bath, or a song. Over time your baby will begin to associate these with sleepy-time.

6 Ways to Get Your Baby to be a Rock Star Sleeper

make baby a great sleeperTo us, sleeping is pretty easy. We lie down, turn off the lights, close our eyes, and fall asleep pretty quick. Our bodies and brains have been trained over years to fall asleep to those conditions. Babies, however, lack our experience. They don’t struggle to sleep well out of spite; they’re just bad at it. In fact, there’s an entire industry of professionals devoted to teaching children how to sleep.

During the first few months, your baby’s need to eat is more important, so he/she will not be able to sleep for long stretches of time. By five months, however, your child should be able to sleep for four or five hours at a time. Use these tips to make your child a great sleeper.

1. Create a soothing routine.

Just like grown-ups, babies sleep the best when their bodies are on a consistent schedule. By establishing a night-time bedtime routine that you follow every day, your little one will be conditioned to fall asleep. He/she will fall asleep easier, sleep longer, and cry out less often during the night.

You can establish a routine by only playing quiet games or activities as it nears bedtime. Give a warm bath, a gentle massage, and keep the lights dim. Try to keep all the bedroom conditions consistent so your baby isn’t afraid when he/she wakes up in the middle of the night.

2. Learn the tired signals.

Every baby is different, so your cues may vary, but after some time you should be able to determine when your child is getting sleepy. Don’t wait until he/she is over tired, fussy, and cranky. The goal is to put your child down before he/she is actually asleep so self-soothing and falling asleep alone is learned quickly. You don’t want to end up being your child’s security object.

3. Swaddle your baby.

The startle reflex is a basic survival skill that babies are born with. It makes them jerk spontaneously. This reflex can easily wake them up. You can provide security by swaddling them in a muslin sheet or shawl. For best results, use a specially made baby swaddle that zips up so your little one can’t wiggle free.

4. Set the room temperature just right.

The optimal temperature for sleeping baby is between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This is usually a little cooler than most people keep their homes. If you can’t adjust the thermostat in the baby’s room, leave the window slightly ajar. Be sure to position your crib away from the window.

5. Consult a sleep consultant.

6. Create some white noise.

You can pick up a white noise machine to create the right ambiance or use a simple house fan.
