Well, since we can’t change the nutritional value of junk food, the next best idea is to use substitute ingredients to make them healthy. Here are some healthy versions of your favorite junk food:

For the Jellies:

  • 1/3 cup freshly squeezed lime, lemon, or orange juice or bottled cherry juice
  • 1/2 t citric acid
  • 1/2 cup water, divided
  • 4 (1/4 ounce) envelopes powdered unflavored gelatin
  • 1/2 cup (3 1/2 ounces) granulated sugar

For the coating:

  • 1 T powdered sugar, plus more for dusting
  • 1 T cornstarch
  • 1 T granulated sugar
  • 1/2 t citric acid

  • 1¼ cups/155g cocoa powder
  • 1½ cups/190g all-purpose/plain flour, plus more for dusting
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup/228g butter, softened
  • 1½ cups/300g granulated sugar
  • ½ cup/110g soft brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon instant coffee, dissolved into ½ teaspoon warm water
  • 6oz/170g rolling fondant icing

Travel Must Haves for Moms-To-Be

If you can get your doctor’s blessing and make smart preparations, there’s no reason to miss out on enjoying travel. If you’re planning on hitting the road, learning how to stay comfortable and educate yourself about which activities are safe, will also go a long way to make your trip less stressful and more enjoyable. Here are some packing essentials for your trip as a mom-to-be:

Comfortable Clothes

Expecting moms should know to wear whatever makes them feel good and is comfortable. Taking it a step further, it’s best to wear a dress or separates, such as a skirt or pants with a top, to accommodate frequent trips to the bathroom. Drawstring pants or those with elastic waists are also good choices for pregnant mothers. Another good tip is to layer your clothing to cope with sudden temperature changes; whether it’s the chilly environment of an air-conditioned airport or the stuffy, warm bus that is crowded with people.

Snacks and Drinks

Whether you’ll be on a long road trip or flying for a few hours on a plane, making sure to stay hydrated and prepared with snacks is going to be an important part of the trip. As you now know, you’re eating and drinking for two, and this will show in how quickly you get hungry or thirsty. Make sure to pack an ample amount of snacks and drinks so that you don’t find yourself uncomfortably hungry or thirsty while you’re stuck in an airplane seat. Also, you’ll be able to pack your favorite healthy options rather than relying on a random convenience store or whatever they are serving on the plane.

Important Paperwork

Some paperwork that could come in handy during your travels includes items like your insurance information, medical records, and emergency contact information. All of this paperwork may either be necessary to travel or just helpful and useful to have available when you’re far from home. Obtaining a doctor’s note that says it is safe for you to travel on an airplane may also be very helpful to have.

Sanitizer/Supplements

Maintaining your health and trying to avoid germs is crucial while you’re pregnant. An airport is one the most germ-ridden places you could be, so being sure to plan for this is important. Hand sanitizer will certainly come in handy as you make your rounds through airport security, bathrooms, and on the airplane. Prenatal vitamins and supplements are also great to have to provide your body with what it needs to be healthy while you’re carrying your little one.

Food Choices

Parents control what their children eat by the foods they allow in the home. If your children are accustomed to having healthy foods available, they’re more likely to learn to make healthy choices.   As they grow up and start eating over friends’ houses or buying lunch at school, having healthy habits at home can empower them to make healthy choices when away from home.  Instead of keeping the cookie jar within arm’s reach, stock a draw in the fridge with fresh fruits and veggies.

Activity Levels

If you want to raise an active kid, be an active family. Make it part of your family’s routine to exercise each day. Whether it’s going for a walk or playing outside, make it a priority to demonstrate and encourage physical activity regularly. Let your kids see you moving and they’ll want to move along too.

Interactions with Others

How you engage with others will influence how your children engage with others. If you treat the wait staff at your favorite restaurant with respect, your child will learn to treat them with respect too. If you yell at the customer service representative for a mistake on your bill, they’ll learn to do that too. Show your child what being a friend and a caring member of society looks like by modeling the Golden Rule.

Cleanliness

Even the way you maintain your home will impact how your kids keep their areas and belongings. If you keep your home clean, neat, and free from clutter, your children will learn that this is the expectation. Encourage kids to take part in keeping the home clean and they’ll gain a better appreciation for keeping it clean.

If you want to raise a respectful kid, be a respectful parent. If you want to raise a child who cares for his health, take care of your health. Remember you are your child’s first role model. The good things, along with the bad, will rub off on him.
