If your child becomes constipated, you’ll be particularly worried because of how uncomfortable they’ll seem. Here’s how you can help.

Belly Massage

Massaging your baby’s belly could end up being a very simple remedy for constipation. Measure three fingers-widths below their navel on the lower left side and begin to massage with gentle pressure. A couple minutes of this may be able to get their body running smoothly again.

Glycerin Suppository

If your child is still constipated after changing up their diet, you can try using a glycerin suppository to stimulate a bowel movement. A glycerin suppository is a hyperosmotic laxative that works by irritating the lining of the intestine and increasing the amount of fluid in your child. This makes stools easier to pass and can work well on occasion to cure the constipation. The only concern is to not rely on this method too often, as your child may begin relying on them to have a bowel movement.

Diet Change

Changing up a baby’s diet is an easy way you can try breaking up the constipation in a child. If they haven’t started solid foods yet, try switching to a different brand or type of formula for them. Also, if they’re breastfeeding, a change in Mom’s diet could actually make the difference as well. If they’re ready for solids, try feeding your baby certain fruits and vegetables that will get their digestive system back on track.

Exercise

Getting your child moving is another possible cure for constipation. Whether it’s crawling around chasing their toys, rolling around with their favorite blanket or stuffed animal, or getting their legs churning with the help of mom, any movement to get their digestive system more active should help.

Contact a Physician

If all else fails, contacting your child’s doctor is your best bet to get additional advice. In addition to any treatment options that they may offer, you should ask them about any over-the-counter stool softeners or products that are safe enough for a baby to take. If you’re thinking about a laxative, you should always consult with a doctor before trying this with a small child or infant.

I like Halloween (my kids do too), but I’m never pleased with the sheer amount of candy that’s available around this time of the year. People have bowls of it laying around their houses, they give it out at stores, and even teachers will hand out a piece now and then. I don’t think you have to be unhealthy to celebrate Halloween, so here are some alternatives to candy that I’ve found.

1. Skeleton Vegetable Platter

Using your basic vegetable platter ingredients (carrots, broccoli, celery, peppers, mushrooms, etc.), you can turn the traditional platter into something spooky. It’s simple to make and gives your celebration a lot of flare. I would skip the celery hair, though – that’s not very skeleton-y.

2. Pumpkin Deviled Eggs

With a little extra paprika and a tiny piece of celery, you can turn traditional deviled eggs into a Halloween-themed treat. The beauty of this recipe is that it’s just as simple as regular deviled eggs, so you don’t really need to learn a recipe. Once you see a photo, you can make them.

3. Cracker Spiders

You can fashion these little crawlers out of basic ingredients. Use the peanut butter (or any type of nut-butter, or even cream cheese) to glue everything together. Even after they’ve sat for a while they’re still delicate, so try not to handle them much.

4. Party Pumpkins

These “pumpkins” take very little preparation at all. Peel a few tangerines and stick some celery in the top – ta da! Not much to it.

9 Easy Recipes for a Grab-and-Go Breakfast

grab and go breakfastIn many houses, mornings are go-go-go time. Everyone has to get ready and get to work and school in just a few hours. As much as we would love to make an elaborate breakfast for our kids every day, it’s usually not in the cards. Here are some easy breakfast ideas to grab-and-go.

1. Waffle Sticks

Rather than pancakes, I prefer to make waffles for breakfast, especially when I’m in a rush. Since waffles are so sturdy, I’ll slice one into three or four strips and let my kids eat them with their hands. If we have a minute to sit down, I’ll let them dunk the waffle sticks into syrup, but if we’re on the move, I’ll sprinkle a bit of powdered sugar for flavor.

2. Breakfast Wrap

My kids love bacon and eggs, but when we’re in a rush there’s no time to sit down. I’ll stuff some scrambled eggs, a few broken slices of bacon, and a piece of cheese in a flour tortilla. This gives them a proper breakfast, but they can eat it in the car.

3. Smoothies

Smoothies are great because you can pack in just about any healthy food you like and hide the flavor with fruit. Kale and spinach are great for you, but good luck getting your kids to willingly eat those. If you blend them in a smoothie with a bit of Greek yogurt, berries and orange juice, the taste is completely hidden and you’ve got a vitamin-packed breakfast. Store in a few to-go cups and you’re off.

4. Bagel with Cream Cheese and…

I like to add little twists to traditional foods so they’re a tad more memorable. A bagel with cream cheese is pretty normal, but when you add a slice of tomato and cucumber, you get something special with a bit more taste. Also, more nutrients is always good.

5. Stuffed Muffins

Muffins are easy to hold and eat while you’re walking or driving. My favorite thing about them is that you can make a few trays worth and keep them in the fridge for the week. If your family likes them hot, 30 seconds in the microwave will do. Mix ingredients like spinach, mushrooms, cheese, onions, and zucchini.

6. Hard-Baked Eggs

Yes, you read that correctly. Instead of boiling eggs (I never get the timing right), you can easily bake eggs in their shells for thirty minutes at 325-350 degrees. Put them in muffin trays so they don’t wiggle around or fall on one another. Once finished, rinse them in cold water to cool them down. (The brown spots on the shell are normal and harmless).

7. Egg Muffins

This is basically an egg sandwich without the bread. Scramble some eggs and pour into a greased muffin pan. Add chopped ham, onions, cheese and any other vegetable you like. Bake until the eggs are cooked well and they should pop out like muffins. Voila! Egg sandwich without any mess.

8. Homemade Cereal Bars

By microwaving your favorite cereal with marsh mellows, you’ll create a sticky, pliable concoction. Let the marsh mellows harden a bit, then mold the cereal into a rectangular bar for easy eating. Make seven on Sunday for the week and keep them in the fridge.

9. Hand-held Hash Browns

Crispy hash browns are a favorite of kids, but usually you have to eat them with a fork and plate, unless you buy the frozen patties, which I’m not a fan of. Spray your waffle maker with cooking spray and lay your shredded potatoes in a waffle-like pattern. After cooking, they’ll stick together like a patty for easy hand-holding.

Healthy Summer Snacks for Kids

healthy summer snacksAt the supermarket, we’re offered countless snacks designed for kids, but none of them are as healthy as we would like. They’re filled with sugars, artificial ingredients and preservatives. When it comes to food, you’ll always serve the best if you make it yourself. This summer, when your kids are home, running around outside, and desperately need the nutrition for their growing bodies, serve some of these homemade, healthy, summer snacks.

For extra protein, offer string cheese or cube it yourself. If you’re in the mood, use a cookie cutter to turn it into fun shapes.

Sliced apples are a popular choice for many parents. An apple is quick to slice and enough for a couple toddlers. Add a thin spread of peanut butter for some fiber and protein. The peanut butter makes it a messy snack for a car ride but perfect for outdoor play time.

Mixed nuts are full of healthy fats (Omega-3s) that are important for brain and eye development. They can also stabilize moods. Nuts keep well and are easily carried to the park, pool, or field. Kids can grab them as they want and there’s no mess to clean up.

If you have the time to make preparations, hard-boiled eggs make great snacks. They’re full of protein that toddlers need and they’re easy for little hand to hold. Boil a batch once per week.

Yogurt parfait with some berries and granola is a great way to get nutrients without all the sugar in store-bought yogurt or kids’ snacks. For a special summer treat, freeze the yogurt in ice cube trays with a Popsicle stick to beat the summer’s heat.

Pasta a great complex carbohydrate that’s perfect for days with lots of activity. Add cooked pasta into a bag with vegetables and chicken (perhaps with some tomato sauce or Italian dressing on the side for dipping) and bring it with you to the amusement park or game field.

The simplest and healthiest snack you can provide are raw fruits and vegetables. Slice them into easy-to-hold bite-sized pieces and pop them in a Ziploc bag or Tupperware. They offer plenty of calories and energy without sugar, sodium, or fat.

Make your own trail mix with cereal, berries, raisons, dried fruit, and banana chips. This vitamin-rich snack can be made in large quantities at one time and doled out in handfuls.

Using vanilla yogurt, orange juice, and a banana, make your own smoothies. Experiment with different fruits and flavors until you find one that’s right for your family. Serve in a non-spill cup so your kids can cool off while they run around.
