The Importance of a Playroom

importance of a playroomTo children, play is serious business. It’s essential to the development of their intellectual, physical, and emotional health. From our perspective, play can look like silly fun, but to children play is how they experiment and observe the world. A playroom is important because it gives kids a dedicated space to play without interfering with the rest of the home.

No More Bedtime Energy

One of the biggest benefits of having a playroom is called “space conditioning.” Children (and adults) develop mental moods to inhabit when they visit a particular space. (This applies to work, a store, the gym, and anything else too.) In the playroom, kids become conditioned to play and explore as they please. In the bedroom, they learn to calm down and prepare to sleep. However, if the bedroom and the playroom are the same room, these mental modes can be become confused.

A Place to Store Everything

If you’re tired of tripping over countless toys all over your house, a playroom is a solution. It gives you a space to leave everything so you aren’t constantly putting it away. If company drops by suddenly, all you have to do is close the door. If you use some clever organization methods (like low-to-the-floor storage and picture labels), kids can help keep the room tidy. Plus, toys don’t leave the room so they don’t go missing.

Children Are Influenced by Their Surroundings

Kids are natural explorers. They are drawn to the things around them. If they spend time in a room filled with things that don’t facilitate learning, they won’t learn. You can fill a playroom with plenty of open-ended toys that allow your kids to experiment and try new things. For example, an excellent playroom would have a section devoted to costumes and dress up, a table for arts and crafts, and an easy-to-access shelf full of books.

A Playroom in any Home

Playrooms are so beneficial that there’s a growing trend of families who are combining children into one room in order to use a spare bedroom as a playroom. At the younger ages, you might be able to spur your child’s development by having them sleep in the same room as sibling in order to move the toys to the other bedroom. Of course, eventually they will age and you’ll want to give them their own space.

6 Benefits of Reading to Your Baby

the benefits of reading to babyI began reading to my son when he was very young; less than a year old. Ever since, we have made it part of our night time routine. It’s still one of my favorite activities. That quiet time together is so special, and now that he’s older, I still read with him every night. The books are a lot different and he does most of the reading himself, but I still look forward to it. We enjoy picking out books together at the library, which is actually where a class I took taught me the importance of reading to babies.  Here are six-reasons it is important to read to your baby.

1. Reading informs them.

Most baby books tend to have a lot of important basic information. These books are helpful because it teaches them about the world around them. What are those things crawling on the sidewalk? Ants! Why does mommy make me go to bed? To get my rest! When your baby begins to talk, reading to them will help them discover what things are and what they are called.

2. Reading forms a connection.

One of the most important reasons you should read to your baby is because it helps form a connection between the two of you. Your baby will love hearing your voice when you read and the two of you will feel a closeness during this special time!

3. Reading introduces concepts.

Did you know that there is research showing that people who read are smarter? As a teen or adult, reading helps you better understand what you know and teaches you new concepts. For a baby, reading introduces countless new ideas. Most children’s books talk about numbers, colors, animals and shapes. This is a great way for your baby to learn about these crucial things.

4. Reading builds vocabulary.

When you read to your baby you are building their vocabulary, listening and memory skills. These are all so important for a baby to learn at a young age. The more books you read to them, the more words they are going to learn and the better their memory will become.

5. Reading teaches communication.

Reading teaches your baby how people interact with each other. A story that has dialogue, even if they cannot understand it, shows them how they can one day communicate and what will be expected of them. The more you read to them, the better.

6. Reading teaches them to read.

Yes, I know that your baby is still too small to read. However, if you instill the importance of reading at a young age, they will begin to read on their own when they are old enough. Reading when you are older is just as important as reading when you are a baby, because it stimulates your brain and keeps you learning. By normalizing reading, you set them up for academic success.

nursing brasGuest Blog by Nicole Zoellner from NizoWear.com

Nizo Wear is the first nursing bra to have a unique, patented pocket in the pull-down flap that can hold a heating or cooling pack helping bring moms relief and healing faster while being extremely comfortable and super chic.

Nizo Wear nursing bras were inspired by the real-life experience of the company’s founder, Nicole Zoellner. When Nicole became pregnant with her son, she eagerly read all the materials her doctor had given her about the benefits of breastfeeding. She happily anticipated the feelings of serenity and bonding that nursing promises mother and infant.

So, Nicole set out to do for other nursing moms what no-one had been able to do for her: provide a practical, comfortable way to get relief from the soreness breastfeeding mothers often experience. Her design was patented, and Nizo Wear was born.

The 4 Benefits of a Baby Massage

benefits of a baby massageYou do not need any special ointments or gels to give your baby a proper massage. All you need is a bit of one-on-one time with your baby. Gently rub your baby all over. Watch for his cues; if he is enjoying a certain motion, continue using it. If something irritates me, abstain from it. Try not to feed your baby just after a feeding or just before; hungry and empty bellies can be uncomfortable. Once you start giving your baby a regular massage, neither one of you will want to stop. Here are the four benefits of a baby massage.

1. Your baby will be soothed.

You have likely had moments when your baby is only calmed by being in your arms. As soon as you put him down, he fusses again. A full body massage is relaxing for your baby for the same reason you and I love them. Having our skin and muscles rubbed produces a calming effect. Your baby’s brain produces “love chemicals” like serotonin, oxytocin, and cortisol whenever he is touched, which make him feel better and calmer. Limit distractions in the room so your baby focuses on the massage.

2. Your baby will feel loved.

Babies need very simple gestures to know that people love them. Since they don’t understand words, all you need is to touch him often and make lots of eye contact. A massage is a perfect time to do both. Don’t make him compete for your attention. Turn off the TV and make it clear that he’s your focus for this time. Those brief moments can help you build a lasting relationship that will last for his whole life.

Helpful tip: A baby massage is an excellent way for fathers to bond with their children, too, who often spend less time with their children than moms.

3. Your baby will sleep better.

While we all have methods of falling asleep, a massage will work for anyone! Offer your baby a massage as part of his bedtime ritual. Give him a warm bath, read him quiet story that’s fun, but not exciting, and then offer a gentle massage. He may fall asleep before you’re finished! If you stick to this routine, he’ll start to get drowsy as soon as you start.

4. You’ll improve his emotional well-being.

By creating a regular pattern of safety and security, your baby will feel emotional connected to his parents. A bond will be established that will support the relationship for years to come. Make sure you don’t treat the massage like a chore. Use lots of smiles, kind expressions, and plenty of eye contact. Massages are also good for parents to help them feel more in control, which is something new parents often need.
