Every baby has a different timeline for teething and there are always special cases where a baby has a visible tooth when he is born. Some babies don’t grow teeth until they are a year old or more. For the majority of babies they will end up having their first tooth between four and seven months old.
Teeth will begin to develop for baby while in the womb as tooth buds that form under the gums. They break through only one at a time and over a period of months. Generally the middle teeth at the bottom will appear first, followed by the top middle teeth, and then the teeth along the sides and back of the mouth. Around age 1, baby will have the first molars come in at the back of the mouth, and the second set of molars around age 2. Because these teeth are bigger they are often cause more pain when they come in. By your baby’s third birthday he should have his full set of baby teeth – 20 in total – and these will then begin to fall out starting around age 6 for his permanent teeth to come in.
Many babies experience discomfort when they begin teething and some of the symptoms include:
- Decreased appetite
- Swollen and sensitive gums
- Problems sleeping
To relieve your baby’s discomfort, try offering teething toys or something firm to chew on. This could be a cold washcloth, some frozen finger foods, or even a popsicle. Even rubbing a clean finger over baby’s gums can provide some soothing relief.
Your baby should be taken to the dentist for the first time by age 1. At his first visit, the dentist will check for signs of tooth decay and share tips for cleaning and feeding. When brushing baby’s teeth make sure to use tap water because it contains the fluoride that is necessary for healthy teeth and bones. Once your child has two teeth touching together you can begin flossing. You should try to avoid letting your child go to sleep or take a nap with a bottle of juice or milk because these liquids will stay on his teeth and can feed bacteria that triggers tooth decay.

Like most new moms, Lisa had been up night after night changing her newborn son’s diaper. She was so exhausted she could barely function, let alone match up the tiny snaps on her baby’s pajamas.
Frustrated by endless mis-snapping and re-snapping, Lisa found zippered pajamas, and thought her problems had been solved. That night when she unzipped her son’s pajamas, he started to cry from the shock of cold air. Although less time consuming, Lisa hated that she had to expose her baby’s entire body with the zipper. She felt her baby’s comfort should come first and yearned for the perfect footed pajama, which was both soft and cozy for her baby and hassle-free for mommy.
One night while feeding her son she thought of “Zippyz.” Zippyz are patented footed baby pajamas for easy and fast diaper changes with 3 snaps on the chest and a zipper from foot to belly. Finally, a solution suitable for baby AND mommy! Plus Zippyz are a unique baby shower gift! Along with her best friend and business partner Erica, Lisa decided make the diaper changing world a better place for all new parents!
