Buy One, Give One

buy one, give oneThis is an important time of year for my family. In the midst of all the celebrating, eating, and visiting with our loved ones, it’s also the time we show gratitude to one another. It’s a time where we take inventory of all the wonderful things we have in our life and appreciate them. Whatever you appreciate (a comfortable home, a steady job, the people around you, or anything else), make a point to let others know.

Hopefully you were able to visit with the important people in your life over Thanksgiving and express to them exactly why you’re thankful. If you didn’t, there’s always time!

This season, we’ll be showing our appreciation for our success by donating some Zippyz to people who need it. For every Zippyz purchased on our website, we’ll be donating one to a local women’s shelter until December 31st.

Many of the women that pass through the doors of this shelter have children, and they need all the help they can get. They don’t have a lot of support in their lives, so we want to use this as an opportunity to help them.

This shelter is a very worthy cause and I know the administrators personally. Help us help them by buying a Zippyz today.

footed pajamas for fast diaper changesWritten by Lisa Youngelson, Owner of Zippyz

Like most new moms, Lisa had been up night after night changing her newborn son’s diaper. She was so exhausted she could barely function, let alone match up the tiny snaps on her baby’s pajamas.

Frustrated by endless mis-snapping and re-snapping, Lisa found zippered pajamas, and thought her problems had been solved. That night when she unzipped her son’s pajamas, he started to cry from the shock of cold air. Although less time consuming, Lisa hated that she had to expose her baby’s entire body with the zipper. She felt her baby’s comfort should come first and yearned for the perfect footed pajama, which was both soft and cozy for her baby and hassle-free for mommy.

One night while feeding her son she thought of “Zippyz.” Zippyz are patented footed baby pajamas for easy and fast diaper changes with 3 snaps on the chest and a zipper from foot to belly. Finally, a solution suitable for baby AND mommy! Plus Zippyz are a unique baby shower gift! Along with her best friend and business partner Erica, Lisa decided make the diaper changing world a better place for all new parents!

The Importance of Family Quality Time

importance of quality time with familySpending quality time with your family can’t be emphasized enough. This is especially the case in today’s society where it seems as if everyone is always busy and there’s very little free time between work, school, chores, errands, and everything else that gets in the way. Regardless of how busy life can get, making sure to keep your family as one of the highest priorities is important to keeping the bond of your family unit strong. Here are some reasons for making quality time with your family:

Make Memories

Families who spend more time together will have more opportunities for memorable moments to occur. Whether these memorable moments occur once a week or once a month, your children will be sure to keep them in mind as they grow older with you. This will also allow for a stronger family bond to be built. A study published in the journal, “Family Relations”, found that families who enjoy group activities together share a stronger emotional bond as well as an ability to adapt well to situations as a family. Having these memories to look back on and cherish later in life will not only bring happiness, but it will serve as a reminder of how strong your family is together and the love that has always existed.

Positive Development

The more time that children are able to spend with their parents, the less likely they are to experiment with illegal substances and find themselves getting into trouble. According to a 2008 study by the University of Minnesota, adolescents who shared dinner with their family five or more times a week lowered their risk of substance abuse by 50 percent as compared to adolescents who shared family meals less than two times a week. This time spent together, whether it be playing, eating, or just hanging around the house, will undoubtedly serve as a valuable prevention from troublesome issues later in life.

Academic Success

A child’s academic success is yet another benefit that is directly related to the amount of quality time your family spends together. Parents who have the time to communicate and interact more with their children usually results in better academic success in their child’s life. Being there for your child to answer questions they may have, listen to their struggles, and discuss possible solutions will go a long way in helping them at school. Remember, you’ve been there before and you’re obviously more experienced, so helping your child with these issues is important.

Spending Your Mornings With Baby

bonding with babyBefore having children, I never thought mornings were very special. I didn’t dislike the mornings, but I never greeted the sun with a smile like they do in the movies. I would wake up and immediately begin to consider the things I had to do that day.

When I had a child, that all changed. Children are tremendously active in the mornings. I like to sit for a minute and gather my thoughts, maybe have a cup of tea and grab a shower before I am ready to start my day, but not my baby!

Your Baby’s Body is Ready for Action

Just like you and I, your baby gathers rest throughout the night. But unlike you and I, baby doesn’t have the skills to control that stockpile of energy. While we might conserve energy because we know it will be fourteen or sixteen hours before we rest again, your baby wants to play right now. His little body and mind will go-go-go until he can’t stay awake anymore, then he’ll do it all over again.

Your Baby Hasn’t Seen You in a While

After a long night in the crib, your child has probably woken up a few times just like you and I do. He will wake up, look around, and realize he’s in a safe place. If he has learned to self-soothe, he’ll fall back asleep until his body is well-rested.

What this means is that he is somewhat aware that time has passed. He knows you have been away from him for a long period of time and he’s anxious to see you. He misses you – not in an anxious way, but in the way we miss our loved ones when they can’t be around. You’ll probably notice that your little one is all smiles when you enter his room in the morning, bouncing back and forth or jumping in the crib.

Use This Time to Bond

This is the perfect time for some bonding because your baby is in the best mood. There’s no tiredness or crankiness to ruin playtime. Even a fall or head bump won’t ruin the mood at this time of day.

Use this time to get some powerful one-on-one bonding time with your child, even if it means you have to start your day a little earlier to fit it in. Play silly games, make funny noises, or stretch out on the floor with toys. Any time you get a chance to build a positive memory, you’re not just making your child feel loved: you’re compounding all sorts of developmental benefits that will stick with him for life.

Your child won’t mind; he’ll be up anyway!

Laura, a mom of two, is the inventor of PunkinWrap, a multi-use car seat cover and baby wrap. PunkinWrap is the only wrap purposely designed to multi-task as a blanket, car seat cover, sunshade, changing pad, tummy time mat, and nursing cover.  The 7-in-one baby solution can be placed over baby while nursing, over the car seat, or over the stroller to keep baby protected from the sun at all times. The wrap is lightweight and breathable so baby is always comfy. Plus, it also gives baby privacy while sleeping and protects him from the other elements like rain and wind.

We’re Back From Our Cruise!

Last week our we went on a family cruise to the Caribbean! Cruising with little kids could be a little difficult considering the cramped space of the cabins. However, we still had a blast! With Alexa still in diapers and sleeping in a crib, we had to be very efficient in how we unpacked our room. I packed each day of the kids clothes in Ziploc bags to stay organized. That helped a lot.

This cruise had watersides, a ropes course, rock climbing wall, mini golf, and much more! There was so much to do we never got bored! I loved having this family time and we made so many memories. We also celebrated Ryan’s 4th Birthday! I can’t believe how big he is getting! He was so excited when he woke up to a decorated room. We spent his birthday in St. Maartin. It was so hot, but we had fun sight-seeing on the French side of the island.

Mark and I had an opportunity for some alone time too and we decided to go zip-lining in St. Thomas. That was tons of fun and the views were breathtaking!

6 Healthy Halloween Treat Alternatives to Candy

I like Halloween (my kids do too), but I’m never pleased with the sheer amount of candy that’s available around this time of the year. People have bowls of it laying around their houses, they give it out at stores, and even teachers will hand out a piece now and then. I don’t think you have to be unhealthy to celebrate Halloween, so here are some alternatives to candy that I’ve found.

1. Skeleton Vegetable Platter

healthy Halloween recipe

Using your basic vegetable platter ingredients (carrots, broccoli, celery, peppers, mushrooms, etc.), you can turn the traditional platter into something spooky. It’s simple to make and gives your celebration a lot of flare. I would skip the celery hair, though – that’s not very skeleton-y.

2. Pumpkin Deviled Eggs

healthy Halloween recipe

With a little extra paprika and a tiny piece of celery, you can turn traditional deviled eggs into a Halloween-themed treat. The beauty of this recipe is that it’s just as simple as regular deviled eggs, so you don’t really need to learn a recipe. Once you see a photo, you can make them.

3. Cracker Spiders

healthy Halloween recipe

You can fashion these little crawlers out of basic ingredients. Use the peanut butter (or any type of nut-butter, or even cream cheese) to glue everything together. Even after they’ve sat for a while they’re still delicate, so try not to handle them much.

4. Party Pumpkins

healthy Halloween recipe

These “pumpkins” take very little preparation at all. Peel a few tangerines and stick some celery in the top – ta da! Not much to it.

5. Witch’s Broom

healthy Halloween recipe

This is another super easy recipe that makes your event or party seem extravagant. It’s so simple you could serve these as snacks on any day (since you probably already give your kids pretzels and string cheese at some point.)

6. Halloween Skewers

healthy Halloween recipe

These aren’t a ghost, skeleton, or mummy, but they still use Halloween colors. They’re great for a party of adults who aren’t easily impressed by vampires and other spooky characters. Simply cube and skewer melon and blackberries.

6 Fall Desserts Your Friends Will Love

Fall is a lovely time to host a get-together or party. Hopefully your family has some birthdays or baby showers planned for this season. If not, Halloween is right around the corner and the perfect excuse for a party. Desserts are fun to make, but I like to keep them relatively simple (nothing gourmet or over-the-top fancy) so that my kids can help out. Here are some fall desserts that your friends will love and your kids can help you make.

1. Pecan Caramel Apples

fall desserts

Caramel apples are a great fall treat because they’re far different than the typical cakes and cookies we usually eat. Since apples are in season, you should have no trouble picking up some delicious specimens. You could even pick them yourself if you were so inclined. This recipe calls for a bit of candy and pecans.

2. Candy Corn Treats

fall desserts

Who says candy corn has to be small? Using colored Candy Melts, decorate cereal treats to look just like the traditional Halloween Candy. Simply make old fashioned Rice Crispy treats and drizzle them with melted candy.

3. Ghost Cupcakes

fall desserts

Every Halloween party needs a ghost! These cute little cupcakes are sure to be a conversation starter. They also look a lot more complicated than they are, which will impress your guests. Simply cover melted candy over a brownie pop and place on top of a cupcake.

4. Witch’s Fingers Cookies

fall desserts

I’ll admit, these are a bit spooky! You might have a hard time convincing your kids to eat a finger, but they’re definitely tasty. If you’re having a creepy party for older kids, these will be a hit. You’ll need a special pan to mold the cookie dough, but it’s worth it for the effect.

5. Spider Web Cookies

fall desserts

Cookies are an important dessert to have at any fall party for guests who don’t feel like eating a lot of dessert. They’re also super simple to make, so invite your kids along to give you a hand – they’ll love being a part of the festivities. The icing in these takes a few hours to dry, so prepare ahead of time.

6. Spiced Pumpkin Cake

fall desserts

There’s nothing better than the smell of cake baking to warm up your home. It’s also a staple of any fall of Halloween get-together. This cake is stuffed with buttercream icing. Fondant is used to make the leaves on top, but it can be a pain to work with so I skip that part myself.

9 Easy Recipes for a Grab-and-Go Breakfast

grab and go breakfastIn many houses, mornings are go-go-go time. Everyone has to get ready and get to work and school in just a few hours. As much as we would love to make an elaborate breakfast for our kids every day, it’s usually not in the cards. Here are some easy breakfast ideas to grab-and-go.

1. Waffle Sticks

Rather than pancakes, I prefer to make waffles for breakfast, especially when I’m in a rush. Since waffles are so sturdy, I’ll slice one into three or four strips and let my kids eat them with their hands. If we have a minute to sit down, I’ll let them dunk the waffle sticks into syrup, but if we’re on the move, I’ll sprinkle a bit of powdered sugar for flavor.

2. Breakfast Wrap

My kids love bacon and eggs, but when we’re in a rush there’s no time to sit down. I’ll stuff some scrambled eggs, a few broken slices of bacon, and a piece of cheese in a flour tortilla. This gives them a proper breakfast, but they can eat it in the car.

3. Smoothies

Smoothies are great because you can pack in just about any healthy food you like and hide the flavor with fruit. Kale and spinach are great for you, but good luck getting your kids to willingly eat those. If you blend them in a smoothie with a bit of Greek yogurt, berries and orange juice, the taste is completely hidden and you’ve got a vitamin-packed breakfast. Store in a few to-go cups and you’re off.

4. Bagel with Cream Cheese and…

I like to add little twists to traditional foods so they’re a tad more memorable. A bagel with cream cheese is pretty normal, but when you add a slice of tomato and cucumber, you get something special with a bit more taste. Also, more nutrients is always good.

5. Stuffed Muffins

Muffins are easy to hold and eat while you’re walking or driving. My favorite thing about them is that you can make a few trays worth and keep them in the fridge for the week. If your family likes them hot, 30 seconds in the microwave will do. Mix ingredients like spinach, mushrooms, cheese, onions, and zucchini.

6. Hard-Baked Eggs

Yes, you read that correctly. Instead of boiling eggs (I never get the timing right), you can easily bake eggs in their shells for thirty minutes at 325-350 degrees. Put them in muffin trays so they don’t wiggle around or fall on one another. Once finished, rinse them in cold water to cool them down. (The brown spots on the shell are normal and harmless).

7. Egg Muffins

This is basically an egg sandwich without the bread. Scramble some eggs and pour into a greased muffin pan. Add chopped ham, onions, cheese and any other vegetable you like. Bake until the eggs are cooked well and they should pop out like muffins. Voila! Egg sandwich without any mess.

8. Homemade Cereal Bars

By microwaving your favorite cereal with marsh mellows, you’ll create a sticky, pliable concoction. Let the marsh mellows harden a bit, then mold the cereal into a rectangular bar for easy eating. Make seven on Sunday for the week and keep them in the fridge.

9. Hand-held Hash Browns

Crispy hash browns are a favorite of kids, but usually you have to eat them with a fork and plate, unless you buy the frozen patties, which I’m not a fan of. Spray your waffle maker with cooking spray and lay your shredded potatoes in a waffle-like pattern. After cooking, they’ll stick together like a patty for easy hand-holding.

7 Labor Day Family Activities

labor day activitiesLabor Day is approaching. It’s the last summer holiday before the kids go back to school (if they haven’t already) and the last chance for celebration until Halloween. This makes it a perfect day to spend some quality time with your family before everyone’s lives pick up the pace again. Don’t sit around the house this Labor Day. Try out some of these activities.

1. Attend a parade.

Many towns throughout the country host an annual Labor Day parade to celebrate the holiday. These parades are usually filled with fire trucks, police cars, marching bands, and floats from local charities, organizations and clubs. Young kids get a kick out of the spectacle. Pick a good seat earlier in the day so your kids can catch the candy that’s often thrown off the floats!

2. Teach some history.

Use this day as an opportunity to teach your kids about the meaning and history of Labor Day, which celebrates the contributions and labors of all the people who have worked to build this great country. We’ve been celebrating it since 1984 with parades, fireworks, fairs, and other family-friendly events. It’s a day where we appreciate each other’s hard work and take a rest.

3. Spend the day at the park.

Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer, when communities stop planning local events, pools close and school starts up again. If you don’t have a parade going on, your local town center probably has some sort of event planned. This could be a fair, free concert or meet-up. Enjoy this last opportunity to get outside and interact with your neighbors before the weather changes.

4. Host a barbecue.

If nothing is going on in your community, set something up yourself. All you need is a backyard and a grill to have fun. Set up a potluck event. Tell your friends to invite anyone along they like, as long as they bring a contribution to the party, like a dish, drinks, ice, chips, burgers, etc. If you don’t care who shows up, inviting people is easy.

5. Volunteer.

Many non-profits schedule fundraising and volunteer opportunities around times people have off work, like Labor Day. These types of workers also often don’t have the typical days off like most people, so they can always use the help.

6. Attend a food festival.

I promise you some cultural group is having a food festival somewhere near you on Labor Day. Whether it’s the Irish festival, the Italian festival, the Portuguese festival or the Chinese festival (well, I’ve never seen that one, but it could happen!), you’re bound to find a good food experience somewhere.

7. Watch a sporting event.

If your family follows a particular sports team, you probably know that games played on that day usually come with some sort of bonus. They might offer half-off tickets, a free prize when you show up, or a special ceremony or concert during the game. Make a day of it with your family and cheer for the home team!

Tips for Throwing Baby’s 1st Birthday Bash

first birthday party ideasYour child’s first birthday part is a huge occasion! Even though your little one won’t remember the event, it’s still important for everyone to celebrate. Invite your friends and family, buy a cake, and sing Happy Birthday! Make the occasion special by using some of these ideas.

1. Invite lots of babies. If your child doesn’t get to spend a lot time around other children, invite anyone you know who has a baby. Imagine the excitement your little one will experience when he/she gets to play with all the new faces! Plus, this distraction will give you a few moments to enjoy your family’s company.

2. Create a birthday keepsake. The first of anything is the perfect time to start a tradition. Pick up a scrapbook from a craft store and fill out the first couple pages with photos and memories of the first party.

3. Instead of a cake, serve a tower of cupcakes. We’re all about eating healthier these days, and that means skipping the large slices of cake. Choose instead to bake a batch of cupcakes that you can decorate and style differently. Also, your one-year-old will have an easier time handling a cupcake.

4. Create a play-place. Many babies around this age still on all fours or just starting to walk. Corral off an area of your house and stock it full of toys and games for little guests to play and interact.

5. Lots of balloons! Balloons are simple and babies love them. Rent a helium tank and fill up a room for of balloons for tossing and playing.

6. Planes, trains, and automobiles. Set up a craft station for your guests to make their own cardboard airplanes, cars, and trains. Add brush and finger paints so they can decorate their creations.

7. Custom invitations. Download a template and fill out personalized invitations for your guests. Make them fun and colorful. Add a construction paper background so they’re sturdy and strong enough to tack to a guest’s bedroom wall as a keepsake.

8. Decorate everything. At such a young age, your little one (and any little guests) will be enthralled by colors, lights, and interesting sights. Use streamers, candles, strung colored lights, wall stickers of favorite characters, and anything else you can think of to make the party rooms look different.

9. Story time! Ask a friend who can read dynamically (or hire a professional – they do exist!) to put on a show by reading a story. Work with the storyteller to set the room for the mood through the decorations and lighting.

no slip baby bowlGuest blog by Barbara Schantz of Baby Dipper Bowl

As a stay-at-home mom of 2 sets of twin babies, Barbara faced the daunting task of feeding them. Frustrated with the bowls she had already purchased, she researched and bought other bowls, but still remained disappointed. She needed a bowl that required only one hand to successfully feed a baby, but wasn’t able to find one on the market that satisfied this need. The vision for the Baby Dipper® bowl came to her when her twin girls were about 6 months old, not long after they started eating baby cereal and other pureed foods. After much learning and hard work, she was able to bring the Baby Dipper bowl to market so that others can enjoy true one-handed feeding.

How Your Actions Influence Your Child’s Development

how your actions influence your child's developmentIf you’re wondering why your child does what he’s doing, chances are he got the idea from you. From making healthy lifestyle choices to learning to be a good friend, kids live what they learn and learning begins at home.

Food Choices

Parents control what their children eat by the foods they allow in the home. If your children are accustomed to having healthy foods available, they’re more likely to learn to make healthy choices.   As they grow up and start eating over friends’ houses or buying lunch at school, having healthy habits at home can empower them to make healthy choices when away from home.  Instead of keeping the cookie jar within arm’s reach, stock a draw in the fridge with fresh fruits and veggies.

Activity Levels

If you want to raise an active kid, be an active family. Make it part of your family’s routine to exercise each day. Whether it’s going for a walk or playing outside, make it a priority to demonstrate and encourage physical activity regularly. Let your kids see you moving and they’ll want to move along too.

Interactions with Others

How you engage with others will influence how your children engage with others. If you treat the wait staff at your favorite restaurant with respect, your child will learn to treat them with respect too. If you yell at the customer service representative for a mistake on your bill, they’ll learn to do that too. Show your child what being a friend and a caring member of society looks like by modeling the Golden Rule.

Cleanliness

Even the way you maintain your home will impact how your kids keep their areas and belongings. If you keep your home clean, neat, and free from clutter, your children will learn that this is the expectation. Encourage kids to take part in keeping the home clean and they’ll gain a better appreciation for keeping it clean.

If you want to raise a respectful kid, be a respectful parent. If you want to raise a child who cares for his health, take care of your health. Remember you are your child’s first role model. The good things, along with the bad, will rub off on him.
